Markham
August 04th 2007
Wilmington,NC

The Markham is a very popular dive. During the summer months "Sand Tiger Sharks" make this wreck
their home. One of the highlights of this wreck is the massive prop on it's stern.
The Markham is 340 ft long ocean going hopper dredge. It spent
most of it's time working in the Great Lakes. It was the Cadillac of
hopper dredges back in the 1960's with many new innovations
which included bow thrusters and an advanced pumpout system.
Now the Markham sits 18 miles out of Masonboro Inlet in 85 ft of
water. The ship listed and now rests on it's port side.
AT THE MARINA departing time was
7:30AM...on a 23 nautical miles trip.

GREAT PICTURE .You can see the characteristic spots on
his back.
The Wreck was packed with SAN TIGER SHARKS .At the
beginning of the dive We thought to have 6 or 8 Sharks...by
the end of the Second Dive We knew there were about 2
dozens Sharks in  the waters around the Wreak. I had never
being this close  a full size  Shark before... Adrenaline was
rushing throughout my body .
This particular Shark was 9 or 10 feet long ,I almost touched
his tail as I was able to swim behind him for about 20
seconds( chasing him)... Another diver was able to brushed
him by. Never before I had  interactive with Sharks with such
as demeanor turn divers.

For the past Few Years these Sand Tiger Sharks had make the Markham their summer home .Every year
there are more  Sharks and Divers get closer and closer to them.
Because of the Shark presence most of the two dives We did were focus on them and little was to do with
other marine life- Which were plenty;Angel fish, spotted fish, dorados, groupers, etc - or the Wreck itself.
This is a dive trip I want to do again.
